Australian Group Races are the highest class of thoroughbred race in Australian racing. The most recognised group races in Australia are the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, Golden slipper and WS Cox Plate, which are all Group 1 races.

Group races total over 540+ races each year which works out around 2-3% of total races held each season in Australia.

Group races are divided into 4 categories;
Group 1 - at least $250,000 prizemoney - 60+ races per season
Group 2 - at least $125,000 prizemoney - 80+ races per season
Group 3 - at least $75,000 prizemoney - 110+ races per season
Listed - at least $50,000 prizemoney - 280+ races per season

The Australian horse racing season runs from August to July each year and we have listed all the Group 1 and Group 2 races on the racing calendar.

The QTC Cup is a Group 2 Australian thoroughbred horse race held under open handicap conditions, for horses aged 3 years old and upwards, over a distance of 2400m. It is held at Eagle Farm Racecourse in Brisbane.

The QTC Cup usually consists of local horses with a few interstate contenders. It is generally an above average field of gallopers rather than high quality, although champion sprinter Schillaci did win this race in 1992. The race suites emerging types who can sneak in with a light weight.

The Gr3 BTC Cup is a great lead up race to this event while horses contesting the race may head on to either the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap or Group 3 WJ Healy Stakes.

Ortensia won this event in 2009 and then went on to run third in the Stradbroke. And in recent times the QTC Cup has been taken out by Chinchilla Rose in 2008, Nova Star in 2007 and Messiaen in 2006.

The Eagle Farm event is held alongside the Group One Queensland Oaks, Group Two Sires Produce Staes, P.J O'Shea Stakes and Dane Ripper Quality and the Group Three Grand Prix Stakes.

First won by Famoso Gris in 1979, the QTC Cup was originally a 1200m sprint until 2005 when it was changed to its current distance of 1300m. Not held in 1988 or 1999, the Group Two event was a Group Three event until 1983.
